Intuition-Do you listen to yours?
How many times have you heard someone say while in the process of relaying a story to you of what has just happened to him or her (most often something negative), "I had a feeling..." or "I just knew..."? How often have you encountered a situation in your daily goings that "didn't feel quite right."? Have you ever looked at someone or walked into some place and had a sudden rush of fear? Its called intuition and its our own personal alert system - our own homeland security for our personal being.
In Gavin DeBecker's book, The Gift of Fear, he states, "The human brain is never more efficient or invested than when its host is at risk. Intuition is the journey from A to Z without stopping at any other letter along the way. It is knowing without knowing why." So why don't we listen to it more? Or maybe you do listen to yours. I have to admit that I'm not very good at listening to mine and when I do, I almost always dismiss it as paranoia or unsubstantiated. I'm going to share a story with you from the book. When I read this example I had a moment, you know like the V-8 commercials where someone hits someone in the forehead- an ah-ha moment.
"A woman is waiting for an elevator, and when the door opens she sees a man inside who causes her apprehension. Since she is not usually afraid, it may be the late hour, his size, the way he looks at her, the rate of attacks in the neighborhood, an article she read a year ago- it doesn't matter why. The point is, she gets a feeling of fear. How does she respond to nature's strongest survival signal? She suppresses it, telling herself: "I'm not going to live like that: I'm not going to insult this guy by letting the door close in his face." When the fear doesn't go away, she tells herself not to be so silly, and she gets in to the elevator.
Now which is sillier: waiting a moment for the next elevator, or getting into a soundproofed, steel chamber with a stranger she is afraid of?"
DeBecker goes on to explain that human beings are the only species that will feel fear and ignore it. His example was of a gazelle grazing on an open plain. The gazelle senses the tiger before it sees it. The gazelle does not ask itself, "Will I offend that tiger by running? I don't want to appear rude."
That story and that example really hit home for me. It did because I am that woman. I hate to admit it because it doesn't make me feel very strong but its true. I can't list the times that I've done something because I didn't want to be rude. I've been that woman waiting on the elevator. I was that woman yesterday. A man rang my doorbell yesterday afternoon. He tried to go in to the spill about selling magazines and needing to collect a certain number of points. I told him I wasn't interested and he asked me for the time then asked to use my phone. For a fleeting moment I thought- No Susan don't go get the phone for him. And then my very next thought was Susan, he may need to call his ride. He's just asking to use the phone. What kind of Christian are you? And I got him the phone. As he was dialing, sitting out on the bench on my front porch, a policeman pulled up. Apparently someone felt uneasy enough about this man and had called the police.
I think there are probably many women out there like me. I think especially if you were raised in the South it is ingrained in you to be polite, courteous, especially where men are concerned. Sometimes its the men in our lives who make light of "woman's intuition." DeBecker compared men and women's perspectives on this issue and states that of course their views on this issue would be very different. He says, "At core, men are afraid women will laugh at them, while at core, women are afraid men will kill them." Three out of four women will be the victim of a violent crime in their lifetime. When I read statistics like these, they don't mean a whole lot to me until I personalize them. Make a list on a piece of paper, put your name and three of your friends names. Now as you read those names realize that only one of you will be spared the experience of a violent crime- only one!
The Gift of Fear goes on to share some very important information and has an enormous wealth of useful tips. I am only about a third of the way through it but its already become a book that I want every one of my women friends to read- I think every woman should read it.
I always wonder in amazement at the human body. I honestly don't know how someone can look at the way we are made and not believe there is a God. And here again God has equipped us with what we need - intuition. I'm going to work on listening to mine more.

Progress
Do you remember Callendar Lane- that two lane spindly little road that felt like it wasn't big enough for one lane much less two. And do you remember when the city first opened Indian Lake Boulevard? I do. I remember driving Avery to Mothers Day Out (at First United Methodist) on Indian Lake when it was first opened and most of the time only seeing one or two other cars and it remained that way for a while. It got a little more crowded with the additions of WalMart, O'Charleys. and Chilis. I drive that road almost every day. I'm definitely on it at 9am and 3pm on Mon, Wed, and Fridays to take Aidan to Mothers Day Out and pick him up. My have things changed.
And I am so looking forward to Barnes and Noble, the new Regal Cinemas and all of the cool shops that will open. My youngest is anxiously awaiting the opening of Cracker Barrel. He thinks that is the BEST restaurant ever because they bring you your own maple syrup in "Aidan" sized little jars!
So this post isn't a complaint. I am all about convenience and all of these wonderful new things are going to be very convenient.
I am however, a little sad as I drive through there now because I know that sooner than I think my trip to Mothers Day Out isn't going to take me a mere six minutes. Sooner than I think those three new traffic signals are going to be turned on. Sooner than I think every acre is going to have something on it down that road. Sooner than I think its going to be the Christmas season and I just get these images of stand still traffic on Gallatin road in the Rivergate area.
So, that's the price of progress I guess. You give a little and you get a little.

Did You Know?
This is a lengthy list but I thought it was interesting.
DID YOU KNOW ?
Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it. That's how the primates do it.
Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream in and then beat them up.
For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Expanding FrostingWhen you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving. Reheating Refrigerated Bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlapping as you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening
plastic they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.
No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.
Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.
Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!
Conditioner
Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it
in your hair...
Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass fill it 1/2" with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it "home," can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works & you don't have the worry about pets or small
children being harmed!
INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS
The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean.
(I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink, ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. well,...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static fre e -- that nice fragrance too, you know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box, well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to catch fire & potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (& to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out & wash it with hot soapy water & an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long!

Monkeying Around
We enjoyed playing with Saundra and her kiddos! And yes both of my boys LOVED the dollhouse- although Avery's play with the dollhouse entailed him jumping the dolls out of the windows to their demise. :) He is a boy. :)

Open Mouth, Insert Foot
I was so excited to show the boys the new pictures. I called them in and Jim came with them. The boys looked the pictures over and were excited to see ones of them with Nana (my mom). I pointed out the picture of me and my dad. Jim looked at it and said...
Now before I tell you what he said I just want you to know that he is a wonderful man!! A godly husband and father and would never purposely say anything to hurt anyone's feelings. :)
He looked at the picture and said... "Look boys, its skinny mommy."
